The acoustic requirements of AS 1670.4 (EWIS) and AS 1670.1 (EWS) can be confusing and are often misinterpreted.

The 2024 update to these standards includes a substantial redrafting of these requirements that aim to remove commonly exploited loopholes and ensure a more rigorous commissioning process.

This session will give you the tools to know what to ask fire services contractors and others responsible for EWIS design to make sure they’re meeting the performance requirements.

Author Information

Tom Brickhill is an acoustic, audio visual and theatre planning consultant with the leading global engineering firm Arup.

His work covers a broad range of projects from large cultural facilities like Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, education buildings like Arthur Philip High School and transport buildings like Western Sydney Airport.

One of his specialties is the design of large EWIS systems where complex acoustic environments create challenges in meeting the NCC performance requirements. As a member of the FP-002 Australian Standards committee on behalf of the Association of Australasian Acoustical Consultants, he has helped to drive an overhaul of the acoustic requirements of AS 1670.4 and AS 1670.1
